KDXP: One Kotlin Codebase for Liferay Apps on Android, iOS, Desktop, and Web

Por LR Tools · 23 de agosto de 2026 · 2 min read

This is LR Tools’ write-up of an announcement by Nestor Ledon on Liferay.dev introducing KDXP, a new client framework for building apps on top of Liferay.

The gap it’s addressing

Liferay’s backend strengths are well established at this point — authentication, users, roles, sites, documents, content, custom Objects, permissions, workflows, and a full set of headless APIs. What’s been missing is a modern, unified way to build the client side of an application across platforms, ever since Liferay’s dedicated mobile SDKs were retired in favor of relying on Headless Delivery directly. That left teams wanting a native-feeling mobile or desktop client without an official starting point for one.

What KDXP actually is

KDXP is a Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform SDK aimed squarely at that gap: one shared codebase that can target Android, iOS, desktop (JVM), and web, all built on top of Liferay’s existing APIs. The current feature set covers the parts of a real application you’d otherwise have to wire up yourself against Liferay’s headless layer:

  • OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code flow with PKCE
  • Site discovery and switching
  • Liferay Objects
  • Documents and users
  • Manifest-driven branding and navigation
  • Role-aware navigation
  • Adaptive layouts across mobile, tablet, and desktop
  • Site-aware deep links

Where it’s headed

The framework is still in active development, with the stated ambition being a single Liferay-backed codebase that genuinely runs everywhere rather than a separate native app per platform. The author is specifically looking to connect with Liferay partners and enterprise teams interested in pilots, feedback, or collaboration — this reads as an early-stage project looking for real-world usage to shape its direction, not a finished product.

A security scanner finding a CVE in a bundled library isn't proof that Liferay DXP is exploitable through it. Here's how Liferay's security team tells the difference — and why an unnecessary dependency upgrade isn't automatically the safer choice.
